Many people have trepidations and misconceptions about massage; here are some answers about things I’m commonly asked. feel free to ask your own questions.
What happens in a session?
We will begin with a brief conversation about what is going on with you and your goals for the session. I’ll step out and allow you to undress to your comfort level and get underneath the sheets and blanket. I’ll return and begin the massage. After the massage ends, I’ll step out and allow you to dress, and we’ll connect for a moment to discuss how you’re feeling and if there are steps you can take towards further help. After paying you’ll be ready to go!
What should I wear to the massage?
If you plan on getting fully undressed, then anything you like! If you prefer to stay dressed to some degree, comfortable, loose clothing that is easy to get into and out of and has some degree of flexibility is ideal.
What will I be wearing during the massage?
You can wear anything from a sweatsuit to being completely naked under the blanket. The less clothing you wear, the easier it is for me to see and feel your muscular compositions, where they are holding tension, and how to help them relax. Massage is all about relaxation; your comfort is the number one priority. Even if you are fully naked, know that you will always be respectfully covered with the sheets. This is a practice massage therapists call draping, and involves manipulating the sheets so only the muscles being massaged are undraped. A key to your healing is creating a safe and stress free environment where you can relax.
What do I need to do to prepare for a session?
If it’s your first time, plan to arrive 15 minutes early so you can fill out some paperwork. For anybody who wears makeup, you will have your face nestled into a face cradle during the facedown portion of the massage, so plan accordingly!
Will it hurt?
A primary goal of massage is to relax and enable healing, so alleviating pain is usually the goal. However, therapeutic pain is real and sometimes necessary to healing! I encourage my clients to communicate with me regarding their sensory thresholds, and I am always gauging their body’s response as well.
What if I fall asleep?
Falling asleep is one of the greatest compliments you can give me as a massage therapist. It means that you’re body is relaxed, comfortable, and receptive to healing. I’ll be able to give you an excellent massage while asleep. I’ll gently wake you if I need you to move, need communication, or when the massage has ended.
